If you’re a cannabis enthusiast or medical marijuana patient living in Nevada, then you’ve probably got a good idea of where to find the closest Nevada dispensaries

Very likely, however, you do not live in Nevada. In fact, the chances are ten-to-one that you don’t. There are darned near 1,000 tourists for every 100 residents in Nevada. In fact, Las Vegas is second only to Miami in its tourist-to-resident ratio. And where there’s demand, there’s supply.

The fact is, the vast majority of the marijuana sold at Nevada dispensaries isn’t bought by residents — it’s bought by tourists. The Las Vegas Conventions and Visitors Authority website claims the city had 42 thousand visitors in 2019 who spent over $10 billion — $700 million of that was on weed.

Most of Nevada is desert wilderness, so the vast majority of dispensaries in Nevada are located in Vegas. By our count, there are at least five dozen marijuana dispensaries in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. So you shouldn’t have trouble finding one.

Dispensaries on the road to Vegas

If you’re driving in from California, then you’ll have no trouble enjoying your Las Vegas vacation.

You could just pick up some pot before you leave at any of 300-some-odd licensed California dispensaries. However, technically, or legally as the case may be, doing so is breaking the law against transporting pot across state lines.

Rather than risk it, you could just pick some up after you cross the border. But sadly, there’s nothing but desert from the California border to Las Vegas. So you’ll have to wait until you actually arrive in Vegas to pick up some weed. (You shouldn’t be driving with it anyway.)

Almost everyone who drives to Vegas from California takes Interstate highway 15. The first dispensary on the way into town is Thrive on East Cactus Ave. Thrive is open 24 hours, seven days a week. As you can imagine it’s a popular stop for travelers so it’s a busy place. However, they offer curbside pickup, so you could call in your order or place it online and it’ll be ready for you when you get there. They also offer delivery. Keep in mind that Thrive is not a medical marijuana dispensary. You’ll need to be at least 21 years old to pop in. If you do, tell them you heard it here.

Past that, once you get to Las Vegas, all roads lead to a dispensary.

If you’re driving into Vegas from Utah, a little ways off the highway in Mesquite, Nevada, you’ll find a shop called Deep Roots Harvest. This is also a 21+ dispensary. They do not offer curbside pickup or delivery, so you’ll have to drop in. Tell them we said, “hello.”

Just a side tip here. You might want to stop into Deep Roots at night. Why? Because coming out of the mountains into Vegas at night provides one of the most spectacular nightscapes you’ll ever see in your entire life. It’s just breathtaking. It’s also quite a spectacle in the daytime, so you won’t be missing out too much if you’re not the night driving type.

If you’re trying to avoid the craziness of Vegas and instead plan to spend time in Henderson to the Southeast, there’s only one dispensary. It’s called The Dispensary. Although their listing says 21+, they serve both medical and recreational customers. They also offer curbside pickup and delivery. The Dispensary NV (its full legal name) is open every day from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Buying marijuana in Las Vegas

The first thing to keep in mind when shopping at Las Vegas dispensaries — aside from making sure you bring your I.D. or passport — is that like most all dispensaries nationwide, they only accept cash. However, we’ve never seen one without an ATM inside.

Visitors won’t have any problem finding a dispensary that will deliver right to their hotel room or vacation rental and many offer curbside pickup. Although there are some Vegas dispensaries that are open 24 hours, most of them have limited, albeit long operating hours. You shouldn’t have any trouble scoring late at night.

Nevada’s medical marijuana dispensaries offer reciprocity and will honor medical marijuana cards from most other U.S. states. If you’re under 21, however, even with an MMJ card, you still might not be welcome at all dispensaries. Make sure you call and check their age limit.

How much marijuana can you buy at Nevada dispensaries?

All Nevada dispensaries are permitted to sell up to 2.5 ounces of flower. Unless you’re a fiend or with a large group, that should be plenty to get you through your vacation. Although that is the limit, you might not be able to get that much of any particular strain on any given day. Shoppers can also buy up to 3.5 grams of concentrates such as hash, shatter, wax, crumble, and cannabis oils.

Where can you smoke marijuana in Nevada?

Technically, you’re not supposed to smoke weed in casino hotels in Nevada. You’re only permitted to smoke or otherwise partake in cannabis in private residences, and only with the permission of the owner. However, there are plenty of “420-friendly” rentals on websites like Airbnb.com. Some non-casino-owned motels are also permissive.

Smoking, vaping, or even just flashing your weed in public can earn you a $600 fine in Nevada. And, beware; if you have more than the legal limit on you, you could be handed some prison time.

That being said — c’mon, this is Vegas — if you’re discreet then generally no one will bother you. And that being said, don’t ever light up weed in a Las Vegas casino. They will throw your donkey ass out on the street faster than you can say heehaw.

At Las Vegas hotels, all of the staff are obligated to report any and all drug use or possession. Assume they will do so, and keep your stash stashed away somewhere where it can’t reek up the room.

Also, driving while stoned in Nevada is no different than drunk driving. Unless you want to risk spending time in prison and paying exorbitant fines, don’t risk it. There are plenty of cabs, Ubers, Lyfts, and even autonomous Teslas in Vegas.

Cannabis consumption lounges in Las Vegas

The first Nevada dispensary to offer a social consumption amenity was the NuWu Cannabis Marketplace. Being on Paiute tribal land just north of downtown, they were able to open up a 1,200-square-foot tasting room back in 2019. In the summer of 2021, Nevada lawmakers passed a bill that allows on-site consumption of cannabis products at licensed social clubs.

Regulators are still grappling with social consumption rules, however. Nonetheless, some licesned operators in Las Vegas are already making plans to open cannabis lounges by mid-2022. Sadly, visitors won’t find any on The Strip. The state’s social consumption law prohibits lounges from operating within 1,500 feet of casinos.
